The visit is timed outside public opening hours, which is what makes it possible. There is no queue, no crowd on the far side of the circle and nobody in your photographs. A guide comes in with you, and the hour and a half goes faster than anyone expects.
Windsor follows for three hours — the medieval streets, the riverside and the castle itself, with entry as an option chosen at booking. Eleven hours door to door makes it a long day, and nobody who has done it describes it as a long day.

What Stone Circle Access actually is
It is a booked English Heritage scheme, not a solstice gathering and not an upgrade sold at the gate. Small groups are admitted to the centre of the monument before the site opens or after it closes, with a steward present throughout.
The rules are short. You stay off and away from the stones, you do not climb on anything including the fallen ones, and you stay with the group. That is the whole cost of standing where almost nobody stands.

Ninety minutes among the sarsens, three hours at Windsor
- Depart 258 Vauxhall Bridge Road. The Evan Evans terminal; the day finishes at Victoria Station rather than back here.
- West to Salisbury Plain. About two hours, timed so the coach arrives outside public opening hours.
- Ninety minutes inside the circle. Among the uprights, under the trilithons, with a guide and a steward and nobody else on the field.
- North-east to Windsor. Roughly ninety minutes across the downs.
- Three hours at Windsor. The castle if you took that option, the town and the riverside if you did not.
- Back to Victoria Station. Eleven hours after you left.
Who this suits, and who should take the standard day instead
Book this one if
You photograph seriously and want the low sun with an empty field. You have seen the circle from the path before and want the version you cannot buy at the gate. You are making one trip to England and this is the memory you want from it.
Choose another if
You are travelling on a budget — the half-day gives two hours at the monument for roughly a third of the fare. You would rather have Bath than Windsor — the Bath day trip pairs the stones with the Roman Baths. Eleven hours is longer than your group will enjoy.
Know before you go
- The slot is outside opening hours. Departures are early or late; check which one you booked before you set an alarm.
- No touching, at any point. Staying off and away from the stones is the condition the access runs on.
- Windsor entry is a separate option. Take it at booking or you are visiting the town rather than the castle.
- Windsor Castle closes Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Pick another day if the castle interior is the point.
- No hotel pickup. The coach leaves from Vauxhall Bridge Road and finishes at Victoria Station.

Questions before you book
Can I book Stone Circle Access without a tour?
Yes. English Heritage sells it directly and it is cheaper that way. The catch is that the slots fall outside public transport hours, so booking direct means driving or staying nearby the night before. Both routes are compared here.
What if it rains?
The day runs. Access into the circle itself can be withdrawn in genuinely wet conditions for safety, and a guided visit beyond the public walkway goes ahead instead. Everything else about the day is unchanged.
Is Windsor Castle entry included?
It is an option taken at booking rather than part of the base fare. The castle closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and St George’s Chapel closes on Sundays, so check the day you have picked. If Bath appeals more than Windsor, the Bath day trip is the alternative pairing.
