Two hours is enough to walk the circuit slowly in one direction, come back the other way as the light moves, and still spend half an hour in the exhibition and the reconstructed Neolithic houses. Most visitors underestimate how much the circle changes as you move around it.

The morning, hour by hour
- Meet on Cromwell Road. Outside the Lycée Français, five minutes from South Kensington station. There is no shop or toilet at the stop, so use the cafes by the station.
- Roughly two hours west. Out through Hammersmith and along the M3 and A303, with commentary and a snack stop on the way.
- Arrive at the visitor centre. Entry is already booked; the shuttle to the stones runs continuously, and the walk across the fields is the alternative.
- Two hours on the field. The circuit, the audio guide, the exhibition and the Neolithic houses, in whichever order the light suggests.
- Back to London by early afternoon. Traffic decides the exact hour, so keep the rest of the day loose rather than booking something for two o’clock.
Who this suits, and who should take a full day instead
Book this one if
You have three or four days in London and do not want to spend a whole one on a coach. You want time at the monument rather than a second and third stop. You are travelling with children who will manage six hours but not twelve.
Choose another if
You want Bath or Windsor in the same day — the Bath day trip pairs the stones with the Roman Baths. You want to stand inside the circle — Stone Circle Access does that outside public opening hours, and the Evan Evans departure holds slots. You need a wheelchair-accessible coach, which this one is not.
Know before you go
- No hotel pickup. The coach leaves from Cromwell Road, so factor in the tube.
- Bring earphones. The audio guide plays on your own phone, and none are handed out.
- Eat first. Nothing is sold on board; the visitor centre café is the first food you will see.
- Take a windproof layer. Salisbury Plain runs colder and far windier than London.
- Walk one leg if you can. The path across the fields passes the barrow cemeteries and gives you the approach the monument was built for.
- Not wheelchair accessible. For step-free transport, the Evan Evans departures arrange an accessible vehicle on seven days’ notice.

Questions before you book
Is two hours enough at Stonehenge?
It is more than enough for the circuit, and it is the only allowance that lets you walk it twice in different light. Anything shorter means one lap and a rush to the shuttle. If you want longer still, the stone circle access departure puts you inside the stones with the field closed to everyone else.
Is there a guide on the field?
A guide travels with the coach and sets you up at the visitor centre, and the English Heritage audio tour carries you round the circle itself. It runs on your phone in several languages. Download it before you leave London, because the signal on the plain is patchy.
Where exactly does it leave from?
Outside the Lycée Français at 35 Cromwell Road, about five minutes’ walk from South Kensington station. There are no shops or toilets at the stop itself, so use the cafes near the station. Allow ten minutes more than you think.
